Word Will Way
1 Timothy 1 English Standard Version (ESV)
Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our
Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Warning Against False Teachers
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at
Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different
doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which
promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. 5
The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good
conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have
wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without
understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make
confident assertions.
8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the
lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and
profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the
sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers,
and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 in accordance with the
gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
Romans 12 English Standard Version (ESV)
Marks of the True Christian
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what
is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in
showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the
Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse
them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in
harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.
Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give
thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as
it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge
yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is
mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry,
feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you
will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but
overcome evil with good.
Ephesians 5 English Standard Version (ESV)
Wives and Husbands
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the
church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to
Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.=
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and
gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by
the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to
himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might
be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their
wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one
ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does
the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall
leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become
one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to
Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as
himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
1 Timothy 6 English Standard Version (ESV)
1 Timothy 6 English Standard Version (ESV)
6 Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their
own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching
may not be reviled. 2 Those who have believing masters must not be
disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all
the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and
beloved.
False Teachers and True Contentment
Teach and urge these
things. [>>>--->] 3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and
does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching
that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands
nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about
words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant
friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth,
imagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But godliness with contentment
is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take
anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we
will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a
snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and
destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is
through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced
themselves with many pangs.
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the
good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called
and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of
Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good
confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until
the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper
time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of
lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom
no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to
be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God,
who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be
rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up
treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may
take hold of that which is truly life.
20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the
irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21
for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.
Grace be with you.
James 1 English Standard Version (ESV)
James 1 English Standard Version (ESV)
Greeting
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion:
Greetings.
Testing of Your Faith
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of
various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces
steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be
perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives
generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask
in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea
that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that
he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable
in all his ways.
9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the
rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away.
11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower
falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the
midst of his pursuits.
Hearing and Doing the Word
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like
a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at
himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who
looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer
who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his
tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion
that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and
widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

James 3 English Standard Version (ESV)
Taming the Tongue
3 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for
you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all
stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a
perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the
mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4
Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong
winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot
directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And
the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our
members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life,
and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea
creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can
tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we
bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the
likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,
these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same
opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives,
or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
Wisdom from Above
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good
conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have
bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false
to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is
earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition
exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from
above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and
good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown
in peace by those who make peace.
James 4 English Standard Version (ESV)
Warning
Against Worldliness
4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is
it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not
have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You
do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you
ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not
know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever
wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you
suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over
the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace.
Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and
weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble
yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one
who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law
and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but
a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to
destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
Boasting
About Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into
such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14
yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a
mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to
say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you
boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the
right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
James 5 English Standard Version (ESV)
Warning to
the Rich
5 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that
are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are
moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be
evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure
in the last days. 4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields,
which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the
harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the
earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day
of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does
not resist you.
Patience in
Suffering
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the
Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being
patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also,
be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do
not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged;
behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and
patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11
Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the
steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord
is compassionate and merciful.
12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by
heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your
“no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
1 Corinthians 11 English Standard Version (ESV)
11 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
Head Coverings
2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything
and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you
to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her
husband, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies
with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but every wife who prays or
prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as
if her head were shaven. 6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she
should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off
her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. 7 For a man ought not to
cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory
of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was
man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 That is why a wife ought to have a
symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the
Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made
from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. 13 Judge
for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a
disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her
hair is given to her for a covering. 16 If anyone is inclined to be
contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
1 Corinthians 14 English Standard Version (ESV)
Orderly Worship
26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has
a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things
be done for building up. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or
at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is
no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to
himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others
weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let
the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may
learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to
prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should
keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be
in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to
learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to
speak in church.
36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you
the only ones it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or
spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a
command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not
recognized. 39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid
speaking in tongues. 40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
1 Timothy 2 English Standard Version (ESV)
Pray for All People
2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all
who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly
and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of
God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for
all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was
appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a
teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray,
lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women
should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control,
not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is
proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn
quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to
exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was
formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was
deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through
childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with
self-control.
Titus 2 English Standard Version (ESV)
Teach Sound Doctrine
2 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith,
in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in
behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is
good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to
be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own
husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger
men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of
good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech
that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having
nothing evil to say about us. 9 Bondservants are to be submissive to their own
masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not
pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the
doctrine of God our Savior.
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for
all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to
live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting
for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior
Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and
to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good
works.
15 Declare these
things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
1 Peter 3 English Standard Version (ESV)
Wives and Husbands
3 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that
even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct
of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let
your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold
jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person
of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which
in God's sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in
God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah
obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and
do not fear anything that is frightening.
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an
understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they
are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be
hindered.
Suffering for Righteousness' Sake
8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy,
brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil
or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were
called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For
“Whoever desires to love life
and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from
speaking deceit;
11 let him turn away from evil and do good;
let him seek peace
and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are
open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
